Queens Theatre in the Park - Flushing Meadows, NY
The Queens Theatre in the Park brought new life to the New York State Pavilion, designed by Phillip Johnson for the 1964 World's Fair, at Flushing Meadows/Corona Park in New York City. The building was a 40-foot high 100-foot diameter concrete drum designed for a sound and light show. It was designated for conversion to a theatre by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Borough of Queens. A newly designed addition provided a lobby with glass-block walls to the height of the older building and two concrete towers housing an elevator and fire egress. The fiberglass discs on top of the towers echo a nearby structure also remaining from the 1964 Fair.
