Leader House - Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
The central feature of this open-plan house is a two-story sculptural wall designed to retain solar heat from the south-facing skylights above. To avoid summer overheating or winter chill, the skylights have been fitted with insulation shades keyed to temperature sensors that control their movement automatically. They are translucent enough to provide daytime light levels that permit reading without artificial illumination. Air is vented through the skylights on warm summer days. A ower level solarium, which can be closed or opened, provides a further buffer against temperature extremes.
