Thornton House - Easton, Maryland
The client, a structural engineer, engaged the architect who wanted the house to reflect the owner's profession. The resulting design incorporates a long-span lightweight wood roof over the main space. The house was designed for a large family and the room count includes two family/media rooms, a painting studio, home offices and an attached greenhouse. The property is located on the Mills River and a large, curved glass wall in the main living space takes full advantage of that view. The house is engineered to withstand full force hurricane winds. Generous overhangs protect interior from heat buildup in summer, yet the design allows for solar gain in winter.
